Description
GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOOD. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Declares that the People of California wish to see foods grown and meats raised with genetically engineered influences labeled at the retail level as follows: "Produced with Genetically Engineered Ingredients." Defines the term "genetic engineered influences." States that historical breeding techniques such as hybridization through mass selection, controlled crossing, line breeding, and back crossing are not to be considered genetic engineering. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: This measure would result in state costs of several million dollars annually, and potentially state revenue reductions that are probably minor in the context of overall state revenues.
