Abstract
Le droit de suite, an invention of European lawmakers, is a statutory provision that creates for an artist the right to receive a percentage of the purchase price on each resale. The California legislature imported this device when it enacted Civil Code section 986, the first droit de suite established in an American jurisdiction. The author criticizes this act and calls for the lawmakers to consider other legislation in their attempts to protect artists.
